2007 Racing to Play - Atlanta
Racing to Play is a partnership between The Home Depot, Joe Gibbs Racing and KaBOOM!, a national nonprofit organization whose vision is to create a great place to play within walking distance of every child in America. During the program’s third year, we’re building 10 more racing-themed playgrounds in select NASCAR race markets. By the end of the 2007 NASCAR season, we’ll have built 30 racing-themed playgrounds. Before our playground-building team took over at Evansdale Elementary School, the school’s 460-plus students had a playground that was old and not safe enough for regular play. Now, the children, school and surrounding neighborhood have an awesome new playground complete with slither and spiral slides, a tree climber, a rockwall, a crazy bones bridge, a monorail, a chin-up station, a super dome and other cool activities to explore. I brought along a lot of help from my Joe Gibbs Racing teammates - we thought starting year three of the program was a milestone to celebrate. J.D. Gibbs, president of the race team, along with Todd Foster, rear tire changer, Ira-Jo Hussey, front tire changer, Tom Dean, front tire carrier, and Jerold Shires, tire specialist, all of the #20 Home Depot Racing Team helped on projects such as the super dome and the racing accents for the playground. We had so many great volunteers we were able to build more than just a playground. There are new picnic tables, planter benches, landscaping, fencing and a walking path around the structure. It’s now a place for the kids to express themselves and have fun. The students at Evansdale worked hard, too. They painted a new mural to decorate the outdoor space and entertained us with songs and dances all day. I’ll be back in action on April 12 in Dallas to build a new playground there. Visit www.kaboom.org to learn how to have a playground built in your community. Through Racing to Play – we’re not just building playgrounds – we’re building dreams. It’s Playtime,
