2007 Racing to Play - Dallas
Racing to Play is a partnership between The Home Depot, Joe Gibbs Racing and KaBOOM!, a national nonprofit organization whose vision is to create a great place to play within walking distance of every child in America. During the program’s third year, we’re building 10 more racing-themed playgrounds in select NASCAR race markets. By the end of the 2007 NASCAR season, we’ll have built 30 racing-themed playgrounds. Previously, the more than 320 children who live at Cedar Springs Place only had access to one small play structure. Now, the children and the rest of the Cedar Springs community have a new playground with lots of fun equipment and activities including a slither slide, a triple racer slide, a beanstalk climber, a rock wall, a chin-up bar, a u-bounce, a flip-flop station and swings. I helped my Joe Gibbs Racing teammates construct the swings and work on other projects like the rock wall. I have to thank Jerold Shires (tire specialist), Tonja Koons (scorer), Jeff Koons (pit support) and all of the #20 Home Depot Racing team for volunteering their time to assist with the playground. We built more than just a new playspace for the kids. We built a place for the entire Cedar Springs Place community to gather. The volunteers constructed new planter benches, picnic tables, peace poles and a wooden replica of the #20 Home Depot Chevrolet. The children who attended the build helped paint a mural and planted flower seeds. The next Racing to Play playground build is on May 17 just outside of Charlotte. I’ll be there, along with lots of help from Joe Gibbs Racing. Visit www.kaboom.org to learn how to have a playground built in your community. Through Racing to Play we’re not just building playgrounds. We’re building dreams.
