2007 Racing to Play - Chicago
Racing to Play is a partnership between The Home Depot, Joe Gibbs Racing and KaBOOM!, a national nonprofit organization whose vision is to create a great place to play within walking distance of every child in America. During the program's third year, we're building 10 more racing-themed playgrounds in select NASCAR race markets. By the end of the 2007 NASCAR season, we'll have built 30 racing-themed playgrounds. The playground's design is based on drawings by children who are served by Project Org & Design Studio. The organization provides services to more than 115 children with and without disabilities or developmental delays and autism in a safe, inclusive environment. Before today, Project Org & Design Studio did not have a playground; the children only had access to a blacktop area for play activities. Now, the children have an awesome new playground with three slides, silo and solar climbers, a see-saw, an adventure tube, a sandbox car, a babble-on and activity panels to inspire their creativity and learning. My Joe Gibbs Racing teammates – Jerold Shires, tire specialist, and Todd Foster, rear tire changer, for the #20 Home Depot Racing Team; and Nathan Boone, pit support, for the #18 Interstate Batteries Racing Team – helped me build the solar climber, a mechanical car panel and the racing accents for the playground. We got our hands dirty mixing cement and moving mulch, too. With so many great volunteers, we also built an outdoor classroom, four child-size picnic tables, trash containers and a tree bench. And, we constructed a loft inside Project Org & Design Studio's indoor learning space. The next Racing to Play stop is Indianapolis on July 26 where I'll be joining Tony Stewart and our Joe Gibbs Racing teammates to build another racing-themed playground. Visit www.kaboom.org to learn how to have a playground built in your community. Through Racing to Play – we're not just building playgrounds – we're building dreams. It's Playtime! Greg
