2007 Racing to Play - Indianapolis
Racing to Play is a partnership between The Home Depot, Joe Gibbs Racing and KaBOOM!, a national nonprofit organization whose vision is to create a great place to play within walking distance of every child in America. During the program’s third year, we’re building 10 more racing-themed playgrounds in select NASCAR race markets. By the end of the 2007 NASCAR season, we’ll have built 30 racing-themed playgrounds. Partners in Housing provides safe, clean, affordable rental housing and access to social services to Indianapolis’ homeless population and those at-risk of becoming homeless. Partners in Housing’s Colonial Park community is home to more than 50 children and did not have a playground before today. The children who live at Colonial Park helped design the playground, and I think they did a great job. Their new playground has triple racer and rumble seat slides, a sliding pole, rock wall, a crazy bones bridge, swings, stand studio, a babble on and activity panels with steering wheels, bubbles and drums. In addition to the main playground structure, we also built six children’s picnic tables, shade structures, and a gardening bench. Volunteers also designed a mural to make the area not just a playground but a place for the entire community to gather. The kids joined in on the action, too. They painted black and white “checkered flag” stepping stones for the entrance to the playground and created their own mural to surround the playground. I worked with my Joe Gibbs Racing teammates – Greg Zipadelli, crew chief; Jerold Shires, tire specialist; and Scott Crowell, transport driver, for the #20 Home Depot Racing team; and Scott Wood, jack man, for the #11 FedEx Racing team – to build the swings and sand studio. On Aug. 2, Racing to Play will build the seventh playground of the season in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania. Denny Hamlin, driver of the #11 FedEx Chevrolet, will be there with our Joe Gibbs Racing teammates, to make sure the playground is built on time. Visit www.kaboom.org to learn how to have a playground built in your community. Through Racing to Play – we’re not just building playgrounds – we’re building dreams. Let’s Go Play,
