Racing to Play

2007 Racing to Play - Fontana

Racing to Play made some California kids' dreams come true on Aug. 30 when the program built a new racing-themed playground at North Tamarind Park with Inland Empire United Way and Hands On Inland Empire. More than 200 volunteers from local The Home Depot stores, Joe Gibbs Racing and the community worked together to complete the playground in just six hours.

Racing to Play is a partnership between The Home Depot, Joe Gibbs Racing and KaBOOM!, a national nonprofit organization whose vision is to create a great place to play within walking distance of every child in America. During the program's third year, we're building 10 more racing-themed playgrounds in select NASCAR race markets. By the end of the 2007 NASCAR season, we'll have built 30 racing-themed playgrounds.

North Tamarind Park is centrally located in the community. Its playground equipment was more than 25 years old and did not meet safety standards for daily use. The old playground was so bad, local children lobbied the adults at their schools, Inland Empire United Way and Hand On Inland Empire to help them find a way to build a new playground.

The new playground at North Tamarind Park was designed by the local children, and they did a great job. The playground has cool stuff like a spiral slide, a triple-racer slide, an adventure tube, whirlwind climber, a rock wall with adventure net, cliff hanger climber and driving panels.

We also built picnic tables and benches, laid sod and painted a pavilion to create a place for the entire community to gather. Kids from the local schools joined in on the action with craft projects to further enhance the area.

Our team worked to build the rock wall with adventure net.

On Sept. 20, Racing to Play will be in Baltimore to build a new playground. J.J. Yeley, driver of the #18 Interstate Batteries Chevrolet, will be there with our Joe Gibbs Racing teammates to help build the playground.

Through Racing to Play - we're not just building playgrounds - we're building dreams.
