2007 Racing to Play - PhoenixRacing to Play had a checkered flag finish on Nov. 8 when the program built its 10th new racing-themed playground of the 2007 NASCAR NEXTEL Cup season at Phoenix Advantage Charter School in Phoenix. More than 200 volunteers from local The Home Depot stores, Joe Gibbs Racing and the community joined together to build the playground in just six hours. Racing to Play is a partnership between The Home Depot, Joe Gibbs Racing and KaBOOM!, a national nonprofit organization whose vision is to create a great place to play within walking distance of every child in America. During the program’s third year, 10 more racing-themed playgrounds were built in select NASCAR race markets. Phoenix Advantage Charter School is a public charter school that serves nearly 700 students from kindergarten through eighth grade. The school opened in 1998 as an alternative educational option to traditional public schools. The school’s playground had become unsafe for daily use. The new playground has an adventure bridge, loop and ladder access, spiral slide, a tetherball, bounce buttons, a slither slide, wings, cliff hanger and solar and beanstalk climbers. We also planted sod, created a track, built concrete benches, picnic tables, butcher block and tree benches and painted murals. The volunteers also landscaped and created recycling stations. The kids worked on craft projects to further enhance the area and entertained the volunteers with songs all day. Our team worked to assemble the swings and the playground welcome sign.
